Brask | Lore: Eternal War

Brask

Brask History

The large, thick skin Brask hail from the inhospitable land called Verako. Verako is a dry, sand covered land that lies far south of Valin, across the vast sea. Here the sun squelches life in most any form. Only hardened creatures can survive its immense, sweltering desert landscape where death is ever prevalent.

For hundreds of years the Brask roamed the enormous deserts as nearly two hundred individual clans. These clans ranged in size from a couple hundred males and their families to a dozen warriors who crossed the wilderness pillaging from any camp they dared.

Food being scarce in the vast wasteland, most clans lived near the North, East, or West coast. The Brask that dwelled inland found shelter in hillside caves.

The clans were in a constant state of war with one another, forming and breaking alliances as frequently as waves beat against a shore. But all feuds were set aside for the annual tournament that decided the best warrior in the land. The warriors fought with whatever weapon they cared to use and beside the fighters in the tournament, there was to be no other bloodshed in the surrounding camps.

Six hundred years ago news reached the clans in the north of massacres in the south where entire clans were being wiped out by an old enemy.

The southern border of the Brask desert is marked by a deep, forest filled ravine. In the ravine lives the Cerberus. A long held understanding between the two nations stated that the Cerberus forest was off limits to the Brask and in turn the Brask desert was off limits to the Cerberus. After two hundred years of peace the forest dogs emerged from their home with the intent of wiping the Brask from the earth.

A great Brask warrior named Dieron led a coalition of a hundred clans south to help protect the remaining clans. As the horde of Brask moved south more Brask joined the cause, and by the time they reached the cave riddled Rhondo Hills all but a couple of clans had pledged allegiance to Dieron.

After days of fierce fighting the Brask drove the Cerberus from the hills and back to their jungle home, but Dieron was not satisfied. He wanted the Cerberus to fear the Brask for all time and chased them into the forest. For seven years the Brask fought the dogs in tense, gritty guerrilla warfare. Dieron stayed in the jungle for all seven years. He never left his vanguard, and he led every major attack. The war ended when they found and killed the Cerberus leader who ordered the assault on the Brask.

The warriors emerged victorious. The Brask relished the fearless leader who united them and a majority of the clan leaders agreed to keep the coalition together. They chose Dieron to lead them and the new society trekked home to the north coast. But he would not survive the journey.

A young, talented captain name Thenos challenged the Brask leader to single combat for leadership of the newfound society, claiming that the strongest warrior should lead. Dieron agreed and was slain. As Thenos retired to his tent, after the long and brutal fight, he was assaulted by ten Brask who proclaimed devotion to only Dieron. The new sovereign slew all ten men in a martial display that sealed his name in history.

Unscathed, Thenos entered the tent and found a note written by Dieron. It was titled, “Laws of Leadership” and it read;

  1. Only a warrior may lead.
  2. Lead with character, with the subject’s well being in mind.
  3. Any warrior may challenge the Emperor for his title.
    • The battle must be single combat
    • The fight must be to the death

Thenos added a fourth;
     4.    Succession is not passed by blood unless the subjects deem the heir worthy.

The new Emperor presented the laws to his subjects then continued the journey to the sea and christened the city they built as Dieron. Over the next six hundred years the city grew from a tent camp to a proper capital with permanent structures made of mud, stone, and bronze.

Thenos ruled as Emperor for eighty-three years till he died in his sleep. He was never challenged. During Thenos’ reign the number of free clans outside the Empires rule dropped from a few dozen to nineteen. None of the clans that joined the Empire were forced to do so. Since his death no warrior has held the office for longer than a couple of decades, but the Brask lived in peace.

Twelve years ago that peace was broken when Emperor Kyros again invaded the Cerberus Jungle after his wife was killed by the treacherous dogs. Once the war was over he set his sights on another land across the sea and a people that thought they were untouchable.
